Tricks of the trade

Chopstick for pouring essential oil
Pouring essential oils from a bottle can be rather piddly, but if you hold the bottle against a chopstick while pouring into your vessel, it runs straight down the chopstick instead of everywhere it shouldn’t.

Add Essential oils to cold liquid oils
Unlike many soapmakers we add our essential oils to the cold liquid oils (these are not heated with the solid oils), and not at trace as many advise. The essentail oil smell gets into the oild easier, meaning your soaps are going to hold their fragrance. Our soaps are stored in open boxes, and still many months later are very fragrant.

Why we use lemon jiuce in our soaps

Why do we use a stainless steel jug to measure lye?
In our own experience lye can statically adhere to many surfaces, but not to stainless steel. We just use a milk frothing jug sourced from Kmart, this also makes it safer handling.

Why ice then water to lye mix?
Using ice keeps the lye mix cooler, meaning less heat, less smoking and fumes, making it much more safer. Because the temperature remains cooler it is ready sooner to make your soap.

Use a spoon for measuring oils
If you pour the last amount of oil, when measuring it through a dessertspoon or tablespoon, it slows down the stream, making it easier to pour more precisely, saving time.
